Voiding coercive/forced marriages is not the same as having a law to prosecute offenders, including people besides the spouses involved.

That would depend on the manner of the coercion I suppose...most forms of coercion are already covered under the Assault section of the Criminal Code...

Yes and we see people brought to justice under it all the time.

Provisions for voiding coerced marriages already exist.

How does that work? If you are a 12 year old girl and have been brought up in this lifestyle, shut off from the outside world? Now how would these childern know anything about the law and their rights.

Sorry peapod, I don't have all the answers...except to say that if the system worked, the polygamists from your post would be in jail, and not able to cause any more harm...

Given the situation that Peapod outlined and the continued existence of forced arranged marriages clearly those laws are not enough though, Vanni.

I would say that we need clear legislation that addresses this issue separately.

You know what is not enough....the fact that people don't give a rats ass that this has been going on to those childern for years.

Not true Pea...I, as a people, er...person, care very deeply about the suffering of others...especially children...

Perhaps some action with the intent of increasing public awareness of the issue is in order? Until you posted that article, I had no idea there were polygamist communes operating in Canada...I always thought that was a problem restricted to Utah and Arkansas...

There needs to be periodic raids and arrest and seizures...

Shut them all down, I say...
