Former teacher Jamie Varley, 37 has been sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for sexually abusing his adopted son Preston Davey during the last four months of his life before murdering him.

Varley, from Blackpool Lancashire, told police Preston had accidentally drowned in a bath, but a post-mortem examination discovered the child had suffered 40 injuries.

His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, who was found guilty of sexual assault, child cruelty and allowing the death of a child, was sentenced to 25 years.

Varley is now one of around 60 prisoners in England and Wales serving life with no possibility of parole, which is the replacement for the death penalty. The whole life tariff is usually reserved for multiple murderers, child murderers and those who murder police officers.

Mr Justice Taylor sentencing Varley to life with no possibility of parole:

The harsh reality for Varley at HMP Wakefield

Varley, 37, has just been handed the harshest punishment that exists in the English legal system - life with no possibility of parole.

Varley was given the rare sentence for murdering a baby, a sentence that is arguably worse than the death penalty.

The sentence is also rare - the replacement of the death penalty, only around 60 prisoners in England and Wales are serving a whole life tariff.

He is heading to HMP Wakefield. Inside a prison that already killed Ian Watkins and Kyle Bevan, his survival is far from guaranteed.

Here is what the rest of Barley's life is going to be like...

Face slashings, neck slashings, scalded with boiling water or oil: Here is what these two child killers can expect in jail

Former high school teacher Jamie Varley, 37, and his boyfriend John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, have been sentenced to life without parole and 25 years respectively for abusing and murdering their adopted toddler son.

Varley is starting the rest of his life in prison at HMP Wakefield in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, the largest maximum security prison in Western Europe. In that prison's brutal regime, they don't separate child killers and paedophiles from other prisoners like in other British prisons so he's certainly in for a rough time. They're to live with lots of large powerful men who don't like child killers.

Those two monsters are going to have to spend everyday of their pitiful existences making sure they don't have their faces or throats slashed or having boiling water or oil poured over them or having their eyes gouged out or being murdered.

From a man who has spent time in prison but is now a YouTuber here's what these two can expect...

Originally built in 1594 but rebuilt over the years, HMP Wakefield, in the centre of the city of Wakefield, is the largest maximum security prison in Western Europe and has been, and still is, home to some of the most notorious criminals in British history.

Child killer Varley, sentenced to life with no parole, has just been sent there. Varley will start his prison sentence in solitary confinement with no contact with anyone other than the prison officers and will be condemned to spend 23 hours a day alone in his cell. Here is what life is like at HMP Wakefield..
