The Liberal candidate in Markham Unionville had to personally call her PC Party opponent to apologize after an “overzealous volunteer” trashed a lawn sign.
The incident was caught by a video doorbell camera and shared with the Sun.
In the video, the volunteer is seen approaching the home carrying campaign literature for Liberal candidate Emily Li. When no one answers the door, the volunteer walks away to the next home, but not before ripping out a lawn sign for PC candidate and current MPP Billy Pang.
After throwing the sign on the ground, the volunteer stomps on it before kicking it down the street.
Ms. Li offered a quick response and apology when asked about the video.
“These were the actions of one very young and overzealous volunteer and they are not representative of our campaign,” Li said. “We are disappointed by the behaviour displayed and I have personally called Billy Pang to apologize.”
“We will be reminding all of our volunteers to be respectful and conscientious at the doors,” she added.
Pang said the vandalism won’t deter him from campaigning to be re-elected to another four years at the legislature with the Ford government.
“Actions like this are not in the spirit of our democracy and electoral process,” Pang said. “While I appreciate an apology was given, no candidate should have their signs defaced by another campaign.”
Sign stealing, defacing and vandalism isn’t unusual in election campaigns.
Earlier this week, police began investigating after signs for Liberal MPP Mitzie Hunter were defaced with spray paint with a graffiti artist writing “Nazi” and “black face” among other sayings in the area around Ellesmere and Markham Rds.
