But i don't know if he will be any more successful in the the west than Dion would be...particularly Alberta where the name Trudeau is like a swear word. But on the other hand, the biggest threat to the Liberals is NOT the Conservative party..rather its the NDP and Green Party.

So perhaps a socialist type Liberal leader would help reclaim areas that the NDP had....

I disagree. If the Liberal party looses the "notion" that it is business friendly it will not do well this next election, especially if the Conservatives stay "clean" and people in Ontario see that Harper is not the end of the world....I would suggest a large percentage no longer fear the Conservatives like they did before Jn 23rd.

If the Liberals move too far to the left, the "socialist type leader" as you claim, they will see a bleeding of white-collar voters to the Conservatives.

But you are right, if the Liberals move to the left they might loose less people to the NDP....but I think at this point after NDP voters are no longer scared into voting Liberal.....I think NDP voters will stick with their party in hope they get an even larger seat count in the next election.

case and point: the liberals better hope for a conservative scandal....or else they are f**ked :p

Well, most likely, the next liberal leader will be an ontarian. and in terms of the left winger leaders, eg. Michael Ignatieff, etc. They are all from Ontario, so they would most likely gain way more popularity in Ontario than Harper. You see, there are a lot of socialist communities that the NDPS own right now. If Ignatieff or Kennedy (lets assume) take over, they would take over those ridings.

Actually, the Liberal party did BEST when they had left-centre leaders. Trudeau was a lefty, and Chretien was in recent times. They had the longest serving times compared to the business liberals like Paul Martin and John Turner. These types did not last too long in the liberal party and are not very popular. As I said, the liberals do not need another corporate leader, to be product of accusations for scandals, etc. The liberals will do better at this time, because of what has happened, with a left-centre leader. The corporate business ones did not succeed in the party as much. I dont think it will lose alot of support, because its not like the party will move to the extreme left, NDP will still be more left. The Liberal Party will still have people like Belinda Stronach to even it out.
At this time, it would be best not to have a corporate liberal leading them, as they just finished with Paul Martin.

I think its a total myth that corporations support Conservatives...maybe corporations in Alberta (where the family dog would vote PC if given the choice). But in the rest of Canada, the Liberal Party actually gets quite a bit of corporate support, particularly in the Financial Industry.

Correct, in Ontario the Liberals have a strong white collar backing. This is the reason that taking a sharp turn to the left would not be beneficial for the Liberals. Like I said, unless the Conservatives self-destruct, Canadians and folks in Ontario are going to see that they are not scary and the fear of a Harper government will/is fading.
