Is Mike Commodore just the kind of character the NHL needs or someone fired Toronto Maple Leafs Coach Mike Babcock may want to watch out for?
However you feel, in a world where people are afraid to say just about anything to anybody, the former NHL defenceman is not timid about speaking his mind.
“Hey Mike Babcock … simply put your players quit on you,” tweeted the 40-year-old veteran of 484 regular season NHL games.
Hey Mike Babcock….simply put your players quit on you. They quit on you because you are a terrible human being. You are an average coach with an extremely oversized ego. You finally got exactly what you deserve you selfish prick. The hockey world is ecstatic.

“They quit on you because you are a terrible human being. You are an average coach with an extremely oversized ego. You finally got exactly what you deserve … The hockey world is ecstatic.”
Certainly, Commodore, at least, appears ecstatic, making no bones about it on his Twitter account following the firing of Babcock Wednesday.
You often hear of the coach chewing out a player. Now it’s the other way around.
“I have been dreaming about this moment for years,” tweeted Commodore, who added “I will be honest, I had a nice quiet evening planned tonight … but circumstances have changed … tonight is a night for celebration … celebrating the demise of Mike Babcock.”
Folks…I will be honest, I had a nice quiet evening planned tonight..but circumstances have changed…tonight is a night for celebration…celebrating the demise of Mike Babcock.
I am gonna get #InOne.

He wasn’t done, tweeting, “#PackYourS— … Babs you arrogant piece of s— … You are a failure” and “Hey Mike Babcock….your daily National TV time is over.”
Folks….enough said. #PackYourShit Babs you arrogant piece of shit. You are a failure. https://t.co/qx7eP606kJ

The NHL has said it will not comment. But a Google search shows Commodore’s hatred of Babcock is not new.
There are YouTube rants and online appearances, including one in May when he said this on a 97.1 The Ticket, Podcast: “If I could legitimately hurt him and get away with it, I would consider doing it, but it’s not worth jail time.”
Commodore, part of the Stanley Cup-winning Carolina Hurricanes in 2006, further joked that if they’re together at a charity golf tournament “we’re not even making it off the first tee.”
He added: “I would have a very hard time keeping it together. With his ego, he would definitely say something, and to be honest, I would fly off the f—— handle. I would have no control. I’m not saying I’m the toughest guy in the world, but I’m telling you right now, I would kick the s— out of that guy.”
If this was said at any workplace, not only would the person be sent home, the police would visit. Even social media outlets have policies governing threats of violence. Commodore’s words stand out at a time when so many say words matter.
The bad blood seems to go back to 2002 when Commodore felt he was humiliated by Babcock who cut him over his weight in Anaheim and later battled with him on their second stint together in Detroit.
Now it’s over the top.
Commodore, who told the National Post in 2017 he drives Uber and plays golf in Arizona thanks to his hockey fortune, has yet to respond to my request — made on social media — for comment.
But I would love to talk to him to find out if this is an attempt at humour or if he needs help?
I have never heard anybody talk about Babcock like this. In fact, community fundraiser Justin “Shaker” Van Dette tells me the coach put in the same kind of charity effort in the GTA as Brian Burke, Don Cherry and Dion Phaneuf.
“He is a first-class person,” said Van Dette.
While Babcock has not responded to Commodore’s vindictiveness, the hockey world, and much of the media who cover it, seem to have dropped the cone of silence on this one. When it was Don Cherry in trouble for words coming out in a clumsy way, they were all over it.
Why ignore this one?
Perhaps they don’t want to tick off Commodore who could be ostracized from hockey or become its new outspoken, outrageous star!
