RE: Lakeside Packers/ Tys

Tyson and Cargill broke Canadian law by refusing to open their books after receiving massive amounts of Canadian money. They wer supposed to pass that money on to beef producers, but shipped it south to their head offices instead.

They escaped all fines because the Conservatives are corrupt and refused to levy fines.

Since both Tyson and Cargill have shown themselves to be bad corporate citizens, they should no longer be allowed to operate in Canada. Since we need the packing facilities operating, and because some hate government so much, I think that giving the plants to the workers is an excellent idea. The jobs stay, the production stays, and the money stays.

Broke Canadian law??? Which one? They were in contempt of Parliament, they didn't break any law. Shit, Rev, I'm in contempt of Parliament.... half the Canadian population is.

You can't seriously advocate seizing private property and giving it away, can you?? What do you think would happen to Canada's economy? It would go down the shitter, thats what. Key to economic success is respect for property rights. This applies anywhere and everywhere.

Being in contempt of parliament is against the law, MMMikey. It is the same as being in contempt of court.

I can and do advocate forcing corporations that will not follow the laws out of the country.

What would happen to the economy? Well, let's see. If the Tyson plant was taken over by the workers, the profits would stay in Canada. Working conditions in the plant would improve. The economy in Brookes would get a definite bump.

Can you explain how shipping record profits, mostly from your tax money and mine, to a corporate head office in the US is helping our economy?

Rev, you sure you don't support the Communist party? Judging by your opinion that the Canadian government can seize private property, is a clue that you share some Communist views. It's all downhill from there............

I've got no problem if the workers buy the plant! Let them buy it... if they do well, good on them. I have a serious problem with the state seizing private assets and giving them away. What would happen to the economy? Just take a look at other countries who have taken that approach. There's your answer.

Nascar, if the corporations don't follow the rules they are not welcome in this country. You seem to think that corporations should be able to do whatever they want wiothout limit. This is a dangerous view because the corporations do not care about the public interest they care about money and if they aren't regulated they will happily do thing detirmental to the public interest in order to make money.

Your country does all the time to get space for new Walmarts. I believe the is a recent rule by your supreme court that said cities could take land without compensation if the city counsil believed it was for economic benfit of the city.

Your government can seize private property, Nascar. They do it for several reasons. You support that government. Are you a communist?

And show me the law that says 'contempt of parliament' is illegal. It doesn't exist.
Furthermore, each House may punish contempt of Parliament (that is, disobedience of its authority, for example by giving false testimony before a parliamentary committee) and breaches of its own privileges.

You seem unable to differentiate between the legal meaning of contempt and...say...my contempt for Nascar Nero, Mikey. Tyson and Cargill were found in contempt of parliament.

Rev your link brought me to the NDP website... what gives?? Seriously, I have a problem with the highly partisan parliament demanding to see the books of a private enterprise. I'd like to think the Conservatives were standing up for this high principle when they opposed sanctions, but I wouldn't bet on it. If Tyson & Cargill benefitted directly from government programs, I suggest to you that these 'programs' were poorly conceived.

RE: Lakeside Packers/ Tys

I suggest to you that Cargill and Tyson were in contempt of parliament. They broke the law in order to cover something up.

As David Kilgour noted, ""Cargill and Tyson know perfectly well they wouldn't get away with this for five minutes in the United States, if they treated their Congress with the contempt that they've treated us."

Hi! I just joined this site. I am a member of UFCW (United Food & Commercial Workers) which is the union that is trying to get into Lakeside. I was just out in Brooks in August with my youth internship. We did get to go see the plant, and also got to sit it when the union talked with the mediator. We were told to try and not show any emotion when talking to the workers. One lady I talked to hurt her back so badly on the kill floor at work that shes forced to sit in a chair. Management will force her to sit on the stairs, or a chair. If they give her a chair, it will be a broken one & they will kick it out from under her so when she goes to sit down, she'll fall. They will laugh at her and some have even kicked her.
