Several FBI analysts tied to the creation of a 2023 memo warning of a potential threat from Catholic “violent extremists” were fired on Friday, according to their lawyer, the latest wave of terminations under the leadership of its director Kash Patel, from the Richmond field office.

This stems from a controversial 2023 internal memo that warned of potential threats from "radical traditionalist Catholic" extremists. While an internal review previously found failures in analytic tradecraft but no malicious intent, conservatives characterized it as anti-Catholic and a politically motivated targeting of conservative groups.

The firings are part of a broader personnel purge under Patel, a loyalist of Donald Trump who has pushed out dozens of employees who either contributed to investigations of the president or who were perceived as not in alignment with the administration’s agenda. The justice department has engaged in similarly sweeping firings of prosecutors since Trump’s second presidency began in early 2025.

In February, for instance, the FBI fired a group of counterintelligence agents who participated in the investigation into Trump over his retention of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, after his first presidency.

The January 2023 intelligence product produced by analysts in the FBI’s Richmond, Virginia, field office emerged as a political flashpoint after it was issued, with Republicans in Congress repeatedly citing it as part of their broader contention that the FBI during the Biden administration was targeting conservatives.

YAY!! It's good to see. People were starting to get worried but from what I understand, there's a LOT more to come. I can't wait!!

FBI Director Kash Patel and his girlfriend Alexis Wilkins are engaged.

Country singer Wilkins, 27, announced the news on social media on Sunday, posting a black-and-white photo of herself showing off her engagement ring while standing next to Patel, 46.

“Went and got the law involved,” she captioned the post, followed by a diamond ring and heart emojis.

The FBI director responded to the post on his personal X account with the same emojis.

How they met
During a December 2025 appearance on The Katie Miller Podcast, Wilkins said she met Patel at an event at country singer John Rich’s house in Nashville in late 2022.

“I walked up to her and told her she had a nice jacket on and I think she turned around and walked away,” Patel told Miller on the podcast.

The two were later in a long-distance relationship with Patel based in Las Vegas and Wilkins in Nashville.

Attending public events with Patel
The singer had made several high-profile public appearances with Patel, most notably during his swearing-in ceremony as FBI director in February 2025 and at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in April, which was called off after a gunman tried to storm the event in an alleged attempt to assassinate U.S. President Donald Trump.

Patel had previously faced scrutiny after the New York Times reported that he used FBI resources to provide a security detail for his then-girlfriend, which included being escorted by a SWAT team during several personal trips.

An FBI spokesperson told the Times that the use of the SWAT team was justified due to the “direct result of (Wilkins’) relationship with Director Patel, she is facing more than a dozen active death threats.”
