Justin Trudeau's government expected to drop niqab appeal tomorrow

Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould is expected to formally withdraw the federal government's request for an appeal of a court decision that had a huge impact on the recent federal election campaign.

The Conservative Party decided in mid-campaign to fight a Federal Court of Appeal decision allowing women to wear face veils such as the niqab at citizenship ceremonies.

It sought leave to appeal at the Supreme Court of Canada. The Conservative Party's former leader Stephen Harper also said his government would consider banning public servants from wearing face veils at work.

Former citizenship and immigration minister Chris Alexander filed the notice of application for leave to appeal on September 21, 2015.

The federal government has, under the Supreme Court Act, 60 days from the day of the judgment to file all supporting materials. That's tomorrow.

Speaking to reporters today, Wilson-Raybould said it's on her radar, "I will update in the next day or two."

Not sure yet. Seems there's a we bit of an identity crisis going on. Der Leader is one with misogynists that segregate their women folk. But claims to be a feminist that uses positive discrimination to not make his cabinet a reasonable representation of Canada.

Give them some time to figure this out.

It was never going to get anywhere with this supreme court anyway. And now that JT is in charge the SC will only get more liberal.

One of the areas Harper failed badly in was in who he appointed to high office. Ultimately, that helped lose him the election.

On the issue of the Supreme Court, Harper's tentative nature and determination to not rock the boat had him appointing mostly solid people, but shying away from controversial (ie, conservative) appointments. Mind you, he had some difficulties finding any given the very liberal nature of most of the Canadian Bar Association, and the fact all the lower judicial ranks were packed with liberals. The result is that the SC, even though most of the members were put there by Harper, often voted down his laws, and were eager to overturn others. The current SC chief is a strong advocate of judicial activism, otherwise known as "screw you politicians, we run this place".

I see so we have a gender balanced cabinet because it's 2015 on the one hand and on the other we the government encouraging women to wear clothing that belongs in the dark ages. It's like...................... hey we only believe in emancipation if it suits our purposes.

That's a great point, if you don't understand that "permitting" and "encouraging" are two different things.
