He just sits there and stares during oral arguments. I know he is a very active Judge.

Read his papers. Read what he has written in the many decisions he has participated in. He has written a number of decisions, and a number of dissents.

What makes you think that becoming involved in oral arguments is all that a Supreme Court Justice does? He goes from the written record, not what some Yahoo preaches in front of the griou.
