CTV.ca | Joaquin Phoenix confirms he's giving up movies

LOS ANGELES -- The writing on Joaquin Phoenix's fists said it all.

The words "Good Bye" were penned on the actor's knuckles at a premiere Saturday night for his latest film, and Phoenix confirmed a surprise announcement he made last week: That he's giving up movies.

"I think it's just moving on. It's rediscovering something else," said Phoenix, 34, whose publicist disclosed Friday that the actor intended to focus on music.

In an interview with Associated Press Television News before the American Film Institute festival premiere of "Two Lovers," Phoenix said the film would be his last.

At a fundraiser in San Francisco early last week, Phoenix first talked about his decision to the TV show "Extra." He abruptly ended the interview after the reporter wondered whether he was joking about giving up acting for music.

Phoenix learned the guitar and did his own singing to play country legend Johnny Cash in "Walk the Line," which earned the actor an Academy Award nomination. His publicist also said Phoenix has been directing music videos in recent years.

"It's like greener pastures, you know what I mean?" Phoenix said Saturday. "And so, I'm just going to try and like, I'll just be doing the other thing. ... Hopefully, I will emotionally impact you with that, as well."

"Two Lovers" stars Phoenix as a heartbroken man torn between a needy, neurotic neighbour (Gwyneth Paltrow) and the sensible woman (Vinessa Shaw) his parents want him to marry.

Due in theatres early next year, the film was directed by James Gray, with whom Phoenix also worked on "We Own the Night" and "The Yards."

So does this mean we're gonna hear a bunch more Cash-style music in the future?

Who cares?

If I put this in the news section, I may agree with you.... he is in the arts and entertainment, he's doing whatever, I figured some here may care..... or may not.

But if you don't care, then wtf did you bother to waste time and post?

If you don't care, I sure as hell don't care that you don't care, so why tell us you don't care in the first place when just not posting would have been enough to let us know you don't care.

silly.

I liked him in the "walk the line" but thats about it. Why does he feel necessary to announce this to the world.... just stop accepting roles and go on with your stinking rich life.

Hey, if Madonna's gotta tell the whole world her marriage is crap and she's getting a divorce (Which has nothing to do with music, movies or anything except the tabloids) then I don't see why actors and such can't tell people, such as their fans, that they're no longer going to continue with their current career.

Then you don't have to continually hear people ask "When's your next movie? Why haven't I seen you in any movies?" and so on..... you anounce it, and then the questions are answered.

Although, I'm not a big fan of his anyways. I did like him in a few good movies like Gladiator and 8mm, and Walk the Line, but meh.
