Naw....bad as Chretien was, he couldn't hold a candle to Pierre the Magnificent for worst all-time PM.
Although Chretien DID manage to make Mulroney look like a relatively honest man....not an easy task.
Harper is the best PM we've had in 50 years or more.
Scary, isn't it??
Pierre Trudeau had 2 saving graces.
He was the last economic nationalist to fill the post, with the exception of John Turner who was only in office for a matter of weeks. AND he was a fierce Federalist, swatting down the petty provincial potentates the proliferate in our country.
My problem with Trudeau was specifically the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.. which for all its good intentions.. handed government over to a bunch of moral and intellectual pygmies on the Supreme Court.. who quickly imposed themselves as a Judicial Tyranny.
A Charter with the force of law.. beyond that interpreted and accorded by Parliament is an ANATHEMA to the Parliamentary system, which has no checks and balances to contain it. And
absolute power, unanswerable to the electorate, will always, Corrupt,
absolutely.
Trudeau was fixated on Quebec.. and had produced a Constitution intended to scuttle Quebec Separatists efforts to legislate de facto sovereignty through provincial legislation by persecuting the English speaking minority. It was the worst possible option.. since the power to overturn Provincial legislation already existed. The last thing he should have done is create an organism beyond the control of, and not responsible directly to, Parliament. That's on his ticket.. and it compromised, perhaps fatally, everything else he did. It has become a divisive and caustic agent to Canadian unity.
As for Harper. He's pathetic. There's not an ounce of patriotic fervour or integrity in him. He's a shill for the Global Free Market Leviathon that is systematically destroying Canada's economy. There is no personality, no charisma, no character to him. I can't descern any type of analytical and probitive intellect. He is ruthless and utterly unscrupulous in gathering power into his PM Office. He has scoured the bottom of the political bucket to appoint complete dolts to the Cabinet.. who are fawningly sycophantic and offer no threat or challenge to his leadership.
The only reason i didn't give him the nod for the worst.. is at least he's not quite the hypocrite Chretien was, in claiming to defend Canadian sovereignty. Harper has never attempted to disguise his contempt for an independent Canada.
