Oh come off it, the Tories are the biggest US sycophants of them all. Harper has even said if we don't get a rollback on the Buy America policy he still won't make any retalitory moves.

I'm not much of a Harper-phile myself, but I do agree with him on the point that there really isn't much Canada could do against the US without hurting ourselves at the same time (and besides, the US is hurting itself just as much as it is hurting us with these measures anyway). Any retaliation would be an economic kamikaze attack. The best retaliation we could hope for would be to raise the price of Canadian resources going to the US. That would be the best we could do, the retaliation that woudl hurt Canada the least and the US the most. But even that would still hurt Canada and so would still be a 'drown him even if I drown with him' kind of policy.

Getting back to the original post, I agree the NHL is quickly becoming obsolete.

I like the idea of Hockey Canada overseeing a vast collective of professional hockey teams across the country competing at various levels of the game...and allowing the opportunity for the creation of multiple pro leagues that use a system of promotion and relegation...it's a system that works pretty well for English football. Some of the northern U.S. true hockey markets could be involved as well should there be owners in those places willing to ice a team.

There'd be no mandated amount a prospective owner would have to cough up to create a team - only a requirement that team owners would bear the costs associated (payroll, equipment, training, travel, etc etc) with competing at whatever level their team sits.

This way, as it is in England, you could literally cheer for your own hometown team - because through a system of promotion and relegation virtually any pro team could rise to the sport's top league. No more cheering for the Leafs or the Habs simply because they're closest geographically to you, etc.

This is all a pipe dream to be sure...but still, something better surely must come to compete with the NHL's ridiculousness.
