If Chrysler were to build a modern version of the engine, it would be cleaner. They aren't about to though.[/quote]
GM did build a new-tech straight six in the past three years with remarkable power/cu. in. However, the engine is only used in rear wheel drive trucks.
The reason for the lack of in-line sixes seems to be space (length). With increased 'crush zones' and more complex plumbing and FWD transmission needs, it's just too long. Too bad because the in-line six configuration is widely known to be the smoothest running engine.
In any event, I guess the point I was trying to make was the current engine technology combined with electronic control produces much more efficient and cleaner burning motors. We can thank California for pushing the industry to this level and probably the same source for the next step.
So black boxes aren't all bad, but keep in mind we only use about a quarter of their capacity in most automobiles, so there is lots of room left for surrreptitious 'performance recording'. There are already court cases based on information obtained from these electronic recording devices following accidents.
Orwell didn't know the half of it.
