the americans don't give a sh*t...after all... they are the worlds sole super power....they feel they have the authority to do what ever they damn well feel like doing.

They're also one of the world's major super-debtors. The party can't last forever. Any fiscal conservative knows nuclear-powered submarines don't grow on trees.

I expect over the next couple of days, we'll hear a lot more about the NPT and Iran. This thread and its loaded poll questions are good examples what we can expect.

This poll assumes Iran has nukes or intends to build them. I have never seen any evidence which supports this assumption. Iran's nuclear facilities are probably the world's most closely monitored.

Iran may have violated some voluntary parts of the NPT. But then again, they never signed or agreed to those voluntary parts. So far they appear to have respected the mandatory parts of the NPT, unlike the five nuclear powers; China, France, Russia, the UK and the US, which are required to reduce and eliminate their nuclear arsenals. Instead these nuclear weapon possessing nations have continued weapon research and modernized their nuclear arsenals in clear violation of the NPT. The US has even threatened non-nuclear states (Iraq, Iran... others?) with a nuclear attack, which is also a NPT violation.

It could be argued that even though Iran has never signed or agreed to the voluntary NPT protocols, they apply even if a nation does not agree or signs because a majority of nations have signed them. For example, international treaties related to war crimes are interpreted this way. If this principle of universality applies to Iran, then both the voluntary and mandatory parts of the NPT should apply to all nations including India, Israel, North Korea and Pakistan. These four states are not signatories to the NPT and possess nuclear weapons. Not only do they refuse to respect the voluntary NPT protocols like Iran, they also refuse to respect the mandatory parts of the NPT, unlike Iran which does respect the mandatory parts of the NPT.

Iran can only be perceived as a significant threat to the NPT when twisted logic is applied to selected facts. In other words the same propaganda techniques which convinced millions of people that Iraq had massive WMD stockpiles ready for launch in 30 minutes and resulted in an unprovoked war crime which has killed about a million people so far.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me...
