``the Taleban were not the legitimate government of the region.``

The fact that Omar Mullah succeeded in largely ridding Afghanistan of genocidal warlords, got support from the CIA, the ISI, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and had the majority of that country's people in his corner, did not legitimate Taliban rule. Naturally, this is because you say so, right?

Musharraf decries West’s ‘obsession’ with democracy

http://www.dawn.com/2008/01/22/top1.htm

Fielding tough questions on upcoming elections, curbs on media freedom and his failure to rein in religious militants, President Pervez Musharraf on Monday vowed to hold free and peaceful parliamentary polls next month but insisted that Western governments must understand Pakistan’s difficult political environment and stop their ‘obsession’ with democracy and human rights in the country.

You mean the fact that Omar Mullah didn' have popular support, was a genocidal warlord and only "got rid" of a handfull of warlords, allied with a few more, and largely used a foreign occupying army of Arab mercenaries to hold down southern Afghanistan?

Ya, real legitimate. I guess by that logic Nato is the new legitimate government, it got rid of the Taleban (somewhat), allied with a few warlords (1/3rd of them) and has support from the same places, and have MORE popular support among the Afghanistan population that the Taleban ever did.

The Taleban were a foreign backed and staffed occupier, nothing more.

US chief: Pakistan terror threat rising

http://wiredispatch.com/news/?id=39840

``The top U.S. military commander said Saturday that the threat of Islamic extremism was growing in Pakistan and that the country's leadership was keenly aware of the challenge facing the nation. Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, made the comment to reporters after meetings with Pakistan's senior leadership including President Pervez Musharraf and army chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.``

Looks like Bush isn't winning too friends or his war in Pakistan, either!
