Today, shortly after the concluding meeting of the Martin Cabinet, the first meeting of the Liberal Caucus for the Thirty-ninth Parliament was held — where the announcement of the interim leadership of the party was made.

The Right Honourable Paul Martin, the Prime Minister of Canada until the sixth of February, appointed the Minister of Defense, the Honourable Bill Graham, to act as the Leader of the Opposition in the House on an interim basis.

In his first act as interim Leader, Mr. Graham appointed the Honourable Lucienne Robillard, the Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition; moreover, the Honourable Dan Hays has been appointed to serve in the Senate as the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate.

What do you think?

I have to say, I was sickened by Bill Graham in foreign Affairs, and absolutely disgusted when he was given Defense.

Only to be pleasantly surprized. He fought for defense issues and, considering he is a Liberal, did a completely competent job. He seems to have won the respect of Gen. Hillier, who specifically excluded Graham in his negative comments about the Liberal party campaign.

Good choice.

I would agree; they seem to have appointed persons who were as distant from both the Right Honourable Jean Chrétien and the Right Honourable Paul Martin as possible — a wise strategy, given the circumstances of Mr. Martin's resignation.

On another note, however, Mr. Martin will remain the official Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada for the time being.

I am sure Hillier is pleased with the Conservatives and their plans for our military.

It seemed so, during the address of General Hillier regarding the recent changes to the command hierarchy of the Armed Forces; he, of course, stopped short of endorsing the Conservative Party of Canada, which would have been an unacceptable breach of the Armed Forces' impartiality in Canadian political affairs.
