I've just been on Le Mans Crescent which leads onto Victoria Square in front of Bolton town hall and there were loads of cops walking along it making their way to Victoria Square. I looked towards Victoria Square and saw a huge crowd of people gathering, some carrying placards, with signs stuck to lampposts. The strains of God Save the Queen blared out. I thought: "What are they protesting about? Is it a pro-Brexit rally?" Apparently, it's a protest against the building of a mosque, and there's a counter-demo (probably assorted Lefties and Islamists). Things might kick off.

A potential flashpoint has been averted as a line of police block the way into Victoria Square for a group of about 20 young men, many with scarves around their faces. The officers shepherded the group back round into Le Mans Crescent and forced them to disperse. It was over in two minutes but families caught up in the commotion, some with children, were obviously shaken.

The group are angry at approved plans for a new mosque in Grecian Crescent, Great Lever, and the Councillor Morris-led Labour administration running Bolton Council.

There is an anticipated counter-protest by Unite Against Fascism and Bolton and District Trades Council and other groups.
