How British women beat the French on glamour

English rose: British women are now seen as more glamorous than their French counterparts

French women may be held up as icons of style and sexiness – think Catherine Deneuve or Emanuelle Beart – but British women spend more on make-up than their Gallic counterparts (probably because British women are richer).

While detractors might suggest that the English rose is losing its bloom, stylists say British women are more sophisticated and quicker to copy the "cocktail" glamour of American women such as Sex and the City's Sarah Jessica Parker, with her immaculately made-up face.

A report today says spending on make-up in Britain will exceed £1 billion by the end of the year.

Women are buying 40 per cent more cosmetics than five years ago. This year, each woman aged 15 and over will spend on average about £18 on make-up alone. Many will spend considerably more, given that a typical bottle of foundation costs £20.

Michelle Strutton, senior market analyst at Mintel, the consumer research company, said: "The British make-up market suffered in the 1990s as a result of the trend towards a 'natural' style but, since the millennium, glitz and glamour have made a comeback."

Sales of skin care products have been booming because of the pressure on women to look young.

Dermatologists say stress and alcohol are putting years on people's faces. Junk food, pollution and too much sun are also blamed for prematurely ageing skin by an average of three years.

Those in north east London are likely to look three years 11 months older. The Welsh and those in the South East have the youngest-looking skin in Britain, according to dermatologists sk:n who carried out a survey of 1,479 people.

Well if she's an English rose where are her breasts? She could easily be a he. She looks more like a Morning Glory weed than a rose.

Curio your sweater comment cracked me up. Good one.

exactly.

Beauty is inversely proportional to the amount of petrochemicals layered upon the skin. (it is a "downward spiral" too. Cover the blemishes, lock the toxins in, poison the body further, degrade further.... i must suck being a woman knowing your best years are behind you "beauty wise" (from a western perspective) by the time you turn 20).

So that is your opinion of the women in the west Caracal? I suppose that is what you tell yourself while you yearn for the Burka. A good portion of men over 40 have beer bellies or love handles, no hair on the top of their head but they are okay with that because it's growning fast in their noses so the loss replacement ratio is good and they see a 20 year old in the mirror whilst they shave. I could go on but why waste key strokes on you.

dear sassy,

how tender you would seem to be.

It is the same social system in question that gives what you claim of men's self-worth.

So ask yourself about the issues with the social system. My comment was not a comment on "what I think of women" but on the socially defined concept of "beauty".

Is your ignorance and hatred of Islam so consuming everything somehow boils down to it for you?

Do we really want to know how much face paint the British women slap onto their face. It is a waste of money, this is not something that you should hold up and say take a look at this, we spend more money then you on cosmetics when so many issues in the world need to be solved.

Shows the selfish side of British women? If they can't see the beauty of themselves without face paint, they are shallow creatures.

Characol how was I suppose to know were attempting to sound philosophical, that is not how your post reads and I've re-read it several times. Not everyone can post as well as our resident philosopher Jim.

Sorry for the confusion sassy.

It can be hard sometimes making sure the message is received as intended on the forum given its limits on how things can be expressed.

I really don't think spending more money on make-up means one is more beautiful. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Having said that pithy comment,I think the french would win hands down if they spent more money on razors.
