In an amazing display of military precision, not to mention equine obedience, nearly 100 members of the Household Cavalry dismount as one from their steeds in a Trooping the Colour rehearsal.

Painstaking practice is, of course, needed to ensure that no one puts a foot – or a hoof – wrong at the event marking the Queen’s official birthday.

This mesmerising image, taken by an army photographer, shows members of the Household Cavalry during an early morning practice this week.

The troops are pictured minus the magnificent ceremonial uniforms which they will wear on the big day on Horse Guards Parade.

But they are still wearing their distinctive plumed helmets. The Household Cavalry is made up of the two most senior regiments of the Army, the Life Guards and the Blues and Royals.

Lined up in four rows as the riders leave their saddles, their mounts appear a picture of calm.

There will be 350 horses on parade on June 9, together with more than 1,400 officers and men from the Household Division, Her Majesty’s personal troops.
