He may have needed to bike to the tracks as he may not have had any other mode of transportation and the tracks were too far away to walk. Also, he may have thought that if he drove a car onto the tracks that people in the train could have been hurt as well. Far less damaging to the train/passengers if a person hits the train as opposed to a car.
