Home Depot Flyer Not Being Honored At Quebec Home Depot Store

This has made major news here. A local Home Depot store here has gone against the wishes of it's head office and decided to disregard the advertised price on a new door, and issue it's own higher price. Will be interesting to see what comes of this as false advertising is a definite violation of the law.

We all know the "Home Depot" head office in Toronto has been contacted in regards to the false advertising, however I wonder if "The Home Depot" head office in Florida has been made aware of this issue.

Here's a link to the story ...

Well I suspect Mike Holmes will show up with his crew and set this Home Depot straight using his Rona Lazer level of course.

Saskatchewan eh!
I liked the stores logic. "CANADA-WIDE PRICES DON'T HAVE TO APPLY TO QUEBEC". Can't argue that as we all know Quebec is not part of Canada.

Home Depot Boycott

I believe more people need to react to this story. For a store to be allowed to charge a much higher price for any article other than the advertised price in the national flyer should not be allowed. I am one consumer but it angered me enough that I will permanently boycott this store until I see a public apology and the issue addressed. I am ordering all new vinyl siding for my home and shed and Home Depot would have been where I would have taken my business. Instead a local competitor is getting my business. I have also made a copy of CTV story and posted it at work. I live on Quebec/Ontario border so I feel I can impact people in both provinces. Come on people....do not let this chain get away with this!

I wouldn't be so quick to judge, the franchise system as a whole is prone to corruption and abuse.

Lets not forget that Home Depot in Toronto/Florida don't actually OWN this store, and he may be losing money off selling the door for that price.

Often inside a franchise political infighting causes problems, sometimes a franchise will try to force one of their own to go bankrupt so they can resell the franchise rights to someone else (usually a form of nepotism).

I'd personally be all for banning franchises. If you want more than one store then you should expand into a chain.

Boycott Home Depot

Thanks for the response Zachary. But when you send out a National flyer it must pertain to all your stores Canada wide - one province should not be omitted or the ad should reflect this. For head office in Toronto to choose NOT to reply in any way to the story ... tells me, as a consumer that I do not need to deal with this particular chain in any way.:wave:Lynne

Usually when a franchise opts out of a national "Sale" involving all the franchise outlets....

There will be a small typed message along the bottom of the flyer (at least it's law in the US....) that the store at ......... will not be honoring the sale prices contained in the flyer.

Sale prices not in effect at ......... Store located at ..........

If that is not included on the flyer the people should insist on the lower price.... and I would hope it was printed in both languages....

Oh I guess it's all over now eh?

The thing is though, the people who published the flyer don't OWN the store. If your coworker told you to work for a lower wage because everyone else was, would you do as such automatically?

The franchise system is a terrible idea if you ask me.

Either that or if the franchise decides to go on it's own, then it should be required to rename it's store. This would eliminate any false advertising on the Home Depot flyers.

The Home Depot flyer is available either in English or in French. I get an English version weekly with my paper and I think they include the French version with the French paper.

So if he is losing money off of that door what about all the other products in the store? I would find it hard to believe that the particular door would be the only item then with a different price.

If Home Depot is trying to close this outlet as you suggest, I find it funny that one brand of door would bankrupt this franchise and none other in the chain.

I used to work at Home Depot. They are not franchises . They are all owned by the head office in Atlanta. So , don't know how they could get away with this.

There are Canadian alternatives to the U.S. owned Home Depot. Try Rona! The stores may not be as flashy as the Home Depot but they are Canadian. Somewhere in the past 20 years price became more important than quality or helping support your own country's industries. If people put the same nationalistic slant on other Canadian companies that they place on the U.S. owned Tim Horton's chain then I am sure we'd see places like Wal-crap and Home Depot pulling out or at least scaling back a bit.

I don't know about the rest of Canada, but the various CanuckTire stores and Safeway stores here all have different stuff in their flyers so I can see them not honoring out-of-area flyers. Making it a big issue sounds like something politicians and the mainstream unimpressive press do. I think they (the press) need to get either a life or a different job and leave decent reporting to those who can actually do the job properly. (The pols? Well, I think they should be summarily canned for making planets out of anthills).

I'm sure now that this has made the news, the Head Office has surely contacted the Home Depot store in question to set things straight. By the way, for some reason, I thought the Home Depot head office was in Florida. I must have been thinking of Office Depot instead. I stand corrected.
