Oil comes from the sun too, Chake. It just took a few million years. It also takes massive energy to produce fuel from oil. Go pour sand from the tarsands into your tank and see how far you get. Your argument makes no sense.

Neither does the argument that since we do not presently have hydrogen-powered vehicles there will never be hydrogen powered vehicles. If that was true, we'd still be living in caves.

You are arguing that a specific change cannot happen because that specific change has not happened yet. That does not match the experience of human history. Maybe you should do a project on the development of technology. Start with the pointed stick and work forward.

It's all well and good for us in North America(and perhaps Europe) to gnash our teeth about our dependence on ever-decreasing fossil fuels.

However,China,India, South America and Asia have substantially higher populations than we do...and they are itching to get into non-Third World status...and will prove to even more voracious appetities for fuel consumption than we do.

While we can have an impact on our legislators regarding lower emission/fuel efficient vehicles, home heating, etc., there's no way we can impact on other over-populated areas of our small planet.

First of all, Canada with its tiny population emits more greenhouse gas than India does, Anna.

Second of all, India and China, a well as other developing nations, will use whatever energy is readily available. If we develop suitable technology in clean fuels, they will be more than happy to use them.

Third of all we can have an impact by insisting that environmental concerns be part of trade deals. Not instituting environmental protections acts as a subsidy, after all. That's as true in China as it is here in Canada.
