You completely confused yet SLM?

Not really. Lol. Kind of amusing what some folks will argue about though.

Could be like you said before that the blue ray player is to far to receive the signal from the router...I had that problem with one security camera I installed.....Had to move the router to a more central location....

Actually what I've determined from digging a little more online is that what IdRatherBeSkiing suggested is correct, the Blu-Ray either needs to be connected with an ethernet cable or I need an adapter to enable it to connect wirelessly to the network. When I plugged it in and turned the player on, it prompted me to find the network, so I did. To no avail. Sigh. I'll have to see about picking up an adapter at some point but it's not that urgent.

When I first got my Apple TV, I had a rented modem from Rogers along with my D-Link router and I had trouble connecting that wirelessly and had to input manually the IP, DNS, etc. But what I didn't remember was running into any trouble with something called a "Gateway" (which I follow Dexter's explanation for, that all makes sense and is clear(er) to me now). When my daughter moved in with me I upgraded my internet package and got a wireless modem from Rogers as I was constantly having to reboot the D-Link. Haven't really had a problem since with my home network.

Northern Ontario,
Remember that those wireless modems/routers do not have the range that a regular router with antennas such as Linksys or F-Link.
Try moving your blue ray closer to check if it "sees" the modem?
That was my problem when I first set up my cameras, with a D_Link router.....everything was fine..then I purchased higher speed from the phone company and my old modem couldn't take more than 5 megs of download speed so they supplied me with another one but it doesn't have the range my D-link had.

I will definitely try that before going out and buying an adapter. But I can say that I've had no trouble connecting to the network from my bedroom with my iPhone, iPad or my daughter's laptop. Whether that really means anything or not I don't know for sure but I'd think it indicates that the signal is strong enough??

Anyway, I will double check it for sure. It was only for the novelty of being able to stream Netflix anyway, mostly I just like having a DVD player in my room as I'll often watch a movie before bed. Or I should say start to watch a movie and then fall asleep before it's done, lol. I have seen the first half of some great films lately! :)

That's the way I learn by checking stuff....My IPhone picks up the network from outside in the car...
The test I did with the camera that was giving me trouble, was to plug it into a portable power supply, I would loose the signal at about 30' and that was through a couple of walls so I moved my router/modem in a central location as it was.
If your internet provider is cable or telephone, you should have an outlet in the bedroom...the modem should be the easiest to move

Thanks DaS, I might play around with moving my wireless modem. What I currently have in the living room, my Apple TV and my Mac, both of which are stationary, should be able to detect the signal from another room. I have a lot of stuff to move around in here, cleaning out Mom's place so my brother is taking some things and I'm taking some things, you know. Have to get the things moved out if we're selling her place anyway. The Blu-Ray was hers originally. In the near future I'll be moving my current living room TV (I think it's 36") into my room and bringing her 50" over for my living room, moving stands around and whatnot. So if end up moving my modem, it'll likely be then. But before I do any of that, I'll be bring the Blu-Ray player out into my living room and hooking it up to my tv (where the modem is) and seeing if it'll connect over the WiFi. Then at least I'll know if I need to move the modem or get an adapter.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw, how cute is that!!!

my guy does the research before we buy it, I do the hook ups which are becoming more and more complex not from a wire perspective but just with figuring out what the fack they are talking about, if I can't figure it out intuitively then I resort to the directions...so far, okay, that likely won't last much longer. Soon I will hit the category that my neighbours are in, they knock on my door and I go and fix it. As long as young people keep moving into my building things will be swell.

When the cable guy comes to my place to install anything, he gets totally confused..

I have regular Telus Internet 50 meg and Telus router, which I run my PhonePower Phone adopter from and my WiFi Printer, then I have a dd-wrt VPN, which I run my Blu-Ray, DirecTV via WiFi, so I get US NetFlix, Pandora and Vudu and PPV via DirecTV.

My desktop runs off of Telus and my laptops switches between the dd-wrt router (default) and Telus.

Not to mention, the Cable guy gets a kick watching DirecTV when he comes to visit..

yeah they must hit some pretty interesting situations...last cable guy had to call in the "escalation" team because some genius facked up so badly when he hooked up a cable below me... what a freaking mess, took four days, FOUR with no living room cable so I had to move all the crap into the bedroom. Escalation guy was here twice and I thought they weren't supposed to use words like that in front of clients...lmao... He left me extra gold splitters and some extra cable that was higher end than mine in my bedroom when he left. I thought that was awesome of him.

In a nutshell, trying to hook my DVD player up to the internet. lol.

I'll get there. I've got my brother on it now. :)
I don't know what is wrong with me but I haven't used my DVD player in forEVER...When you get it hooked up, what can you do with it, download movies and stuff? That would be good.

I just hang on Channel 309. If it's not there, I don't watch it. I can't even read any more. Yesterday I found a new series that looks interesting called Ray Donovan. I gotta be twisted or something because I think this program will be the new Sopranos and I loved Tony. Gonna love Ray now because I think this is Dexter's last season. :sad8: If the main character is twisted with a dark side, I'm all over it. I can't watch regular TV anymore, I want to kill them all. *sob* It sucks, I must have the concentration level of a gnat when watching tv. now a days.

Recommendation for you then, you want to watch Season 1 and 2 of The Killing. Absolutely freaking amazing cop drama/who dun it. If the first episode doesn't have you hooked, and I mean hooked, then I don't know what will. Out on DVD now or available on Netflix if you have that, but if you get the DVD get both seasons, only 10 episodes a season anyway. There are a lot of red herrings thrown in but trust me the pay off at the end is sooooo worth it!!!

Season 3 is currently on AMC. I think you'll love it.

YES!!!!
thanks so much and yes you are dead on, right call for me!!!! that show is absolutely EXCEPTIONAL!!

Sooooooooooooooo how much is it going to cost me to buy Season 1 and 2? I just found it this year...it is so blaaaaack. It is hard to rent DVD's now but I know a place that might have it. I tried to find it on line but was afraid to download it because hell now a days one could be pulling in anything.

Acting is amazing! Plot line totally engrossing. Character development - exceptional.

There is a character in it, the guy with the bald head, Hugh Dillion I think. He did a series called Durham County. It is a Canadian series. Powerful. He plays a detective in that one. It is as black and slick as The Killing. When I tested the Killing the opening seemed just like Durham County and then when I saw Hugh Dillon, hooked baby, hooked. He is one very hot looking 50 year old. Check it out. If you get 309 I believe all seasons are there! I think there are two or three that's it ♦

I downloaded it from iTunes the first two seasons together (have to make sure it's together because they also sell them separately) HD for $29.99. That's a safe download and it's legit. The first episode of the first season had me in tears at the end. And that was prior to getting invested in the characters, it was just that good.

The first two seasons revolve around solving one murder. In fact people were apparently ticked that it wasn't solved at the end of the first season, but I watched both seasons back to back and I think, if you keep yourself unspoiled, the payoff is so worth it.

But the only characters that are in first two seasons are Detectives Linden and Holder. Everyone else is different.

I still need to catch up on Season three, I've only seen the first couple of episodes since Dexter came back on I've been watching that Sunday nights. But I'll catch up with it, so far I'm enjoying it. Particularly Peter Saarsgard as Ray, the guy on death row. There is so much going on there.

Ah it makes sense that Hugh Dillion isn't in the first two seasons as he was likely doing Durham County and he is also in Flashpoint. I hear people like Flashpoint it but it is not on enough levels for me. I don't like one dimensional characters that are all good or all bad because that is not possible from a human standpoint.

I will for sure hunt down Season 1 and 2 then if you say they are that good. I have never made a purchase like that on line. Did you hook it to your tv and watch it that way? I don't enjoy watching on my computer as much as my tv. The Ray character is very complex and the whole situation with his son and the drawings is ramping the tension up.

Did you see the episode when she was out jogging and it began to rain. That made me cry. OMG it still haunts me.

I start work again tomorrow so I will need things to entertain me at night now. I am going to see if I can get the series. Thanks so much. and check out Ray Donovan. I predict it will grow on you. :)
