HDTV hype is starting to "censored" me off.

Two years ago, our kids bought us a top of the line Sony DVD player that does not have the HD feature. One year ago we bought ourselves a 34 inch flat screen TV that has the HD feature. Shaw, our cable company offers some HD programming for an extra charge. I have seen HDTV and the difference is subtle to say the least. The cable representative tells us that HDTV will be better when they get more people subscribing. No doubt they will want a better price as well.

Any thoughts on this?

Last year I bought myself the regular Sony Trinitron. I couldn't justify the cost/benefit of HDTV technology (although I nearly had to rent a crane to get the TV in my house). Perhaps 5 or 10 years out I'll pick up on it when it's more mainstream

I know what you mean.

Our TV is a picture tube TV with a flat screen. It weighs almost two hundred pounds and is probably the most awkward damn thing to lift or carry I've seen. We bought the "in home" service because it literally won't fit in either of our cars.

Though we get a bulletin almost weekly on it, I don't think we will miss HDTV any time soon.

if your upset now, juan, wait until the HD-DVD vs blu-ray battle begins next month (if the launches begin next month as planned).

Best to sit back and let the parties fight it out for now (not just for the format wars, but the AACS issues).

It is probably my age showing through. I had too much inertia to buy a Beta vcr when they first came out but I did buy one of the early VHS machines.(for about $1100.00, doesn't that make you sick?) In the same time period I bought a cassette deck with both Dolby and DBX noise reduction. Along came CDs and my new tape deck was obsolete. I have spent a good deal of money fighting the ongoing obsolescence my electronics. Admittedly there have been improvements, but some of the improvements, like HDTV, are questionable.

I scrounged a picture window and saved enough money in the process to supply a drug hobby the programes are always nature , nekkid women who dance arround in the bushes and chase the deer and bunnys the colours are spectacular,I'm just kidding because I'm envious, if I could afford the gear and good programming I'd whatch more TV but till that time it's clouds and rain and what ever else passes in front of the big screen.

Juan, I thought I was the only guy who paid too much for a vcr. I didn't get the beta but paid $650 for a JVC model.

I waited a long time on the transition from tape to CD. I was probably the last guy to buy his first CD player. Unfortunately I plugged it into a 20 year old Sansui stereo which tanked a short time later. Now the only music I listen to is in my car.

p.s. I also paid $3500.00 for one of the 256-model computers in 1989. It did nothing except tell me this - SYNTAX ERROR.

Hey Kreskin

Not too long ago, I was wondering through A & B Sound and they had a great Dual turntable for less than a hundred dollars. I bought the damn thing and brought it home. I had to go back and spend another twenty five dollars on a pre-amp but I got it hooked up and I now listen to the LPs that have been gathering dust in my "office"(my playroom) for twenty years or so. Some of those old Lps just can't be found anymore.

Juan, ya it was actually a 286 DOS. It was obsolete before I opened the box.

How's the turntable working out. Are you able to use it? I think it's a bit of a schmozzle to get replacement needles. So many of us have huge LP collections. Is there a way with your system to tape the LP's then convert to CD?

The turntable is great.

I live in Nanaimo and we have several record stores that still sell Lps(both used and new). They also sell needles and that sort of thing. A & B Sound does as well.

Switching records to CDs is a bit of a pain but it can be done. I have a program that lets me play the record into my hard drive and then burn it onto a CD. Unfortunately, it preserves all the scratches along with the music.

I've been wanting to do that, Juan. How do you do it? Do you connect the turntable somehow to the computer or do you need an amp or?

juan goes retro....

next time i pass through nanaimo i will have to check if DJ juan is working the floor.

Ah, the pain of electronics. Newer is better, better is more expensive. I used to stay on the bleeding edge, but got tired of the bleeding part so now I am far more methodical in long term planning for electronics. I don't do retro though. I don't have LPs, tapes, VHS or Beta or their associated hardware anymore.
