This is a speech I'm sure Harper would like everyone to forget:

Ladies and gentlemen, let me begin by giving you a big welcome to Canada. Let's start up with a compliment. You're here from the second greatest nation on earth. But seriously, your country, and particularly your conservative movement, is a light and an inspiration to people in this country and across the world.

Now, having given you a compliment, let me also give you an insult. I was asked to speak about Canadian politics. It may not be true, but it's legendary that if you're like all Americans, you know almost nothing except for your own country. Which makes you probably knowledgeable about one more country than most Canadians.

But in any case, my speech will make that assumption. I'll talk fairly basic stuff. If it seems pedestrian to some of you who do know a lot about Canada, I apologize.

I'm going to look at three things. First of all, just some basic facts about Canada that are relevant to my talk, facts about the country and its political system, its civics. Second, I want to take a look at the party system that's developed in Canada from a conventional left/right, or liberal/conservative perspective. The third thing I'm going to do is look at the political system again, because it can't be looked at in this country simply from the conventional perspective.

First, facts about Canada. Canada is a Northern European welfare state in the worst sense of the term, and very proud of it. Canadians make no connection between the fact that they are a Northern European welfare state and the fact that we have very low economic growth, a standard of living substantially lower than yours, a massive brain drain of young professionals to your country, and double the unemployment rate of the United States.

In terms of the unemployed, of which we have over a million-and-a-half, don't feel particularly bad for many of these people. They don't feel bad about it themselves, as long as they're receiving generous social assistance and unemployment insurance.

the funny co-incidence in this story hitting th globe today is today is also the day i saw the first "stand up for canada"ad from the cons. It is so hilarious and frightening to see harper running propaganda claiming he stands up for canada. I suspect the only standing up for canada he would do would be to welcome his republican heros to their new territory.

- another speach he might want people to forget -

Stephen Harper once said
:
“For the first time in history, the Canadian government has not stood beside its key British and American allies in their time of need.”

Now he says
....that a Conservative government would not join the U.S.-led war in Iraq

Aw shucks, we are picking on the Bully now.
HA!!

Harper quote from original post:
" Canadians make no connection between the fact that they are a Northern European welfare state and the fact that we have very low economic growth, a standard of living substantially lower than yours, a massive brain drain of young professionals to your country, and double the unemployment rate of the United States. "

K - I need to say here that WELFARE is being blamed for "al our woes", as usual per Neo-Cons. The fact is that the OIL INDUSTRY actually gets more "welfare" than all the welfare cases in Canada combined.
I should back that up with facts, but its foggy with Royalty rebates and Tax holidays, and loan gaurantees etc... suffice to say the drain on CanGovt. coffers from those items is about double the welfare bill when all industry and corporate welfare is combined.

Also, the recent government SURPLUSES proves that there is lots of money around.

Also, the USA health-care bill is "more-per-person" than in Canada, and they pay it privately which was not subtracted from the sum of "how well off the Americans are".

I find that the speech was meant to be funny, and not to be taken seriously. But having said that:

have very low economic growth, a standard of living substantially lower than yours, a massive brain drain of young professionals to your country, and double the unemployment rate of the United States. "

is this total fallacy or does it have some truth to it?

RE: Harper's Favorite Spe

There's no truth to that. Unemployment is only 4% in my province, and the highest is only 14% in newfoundland. Our growth is purposely regulated to control inflation to keep the cost of living down for Canadians. At this moment, our only limitation on growth is that our infrastructure can't keep up, and that our population is becoming a limited factor. This is good, because it's reducing the disparity between classes, but not eliminating it. Are tax system is designed so that people who make a lot of money, either pay a lot of tax, or use it to expand their companies and create more jobs. Our economy is a model amongst the G8 nations, and many countries wish they could pull things together like we have.

Remember, Harper was speaking 8 years ago. At the time, what he said was basically the truth.

Remember, Harper was speaking 8 years ago. At the time, what he said was basically the truth.

Eight years ago we were still suffering from the mess Mulroney put us into, so let's not forget that Harper was calling Mulroney an important advisor at the policy convention.

Let us also not forget that Harper has never really stopped attacking Canada's social programs and foreign policy until his recent flip-flops on almost everything for this election. Before that his answer was basically to look south to his hero Geroge Bush. That's why senior Conservatives were invited to the Republican National Convention. That's why Harper wrote a letter of apology when we didn't join in their illegal invasion, that's why he still supports BMD, and that's why he's dangerous to the existence of Canada as a sovereign state.
