Obama urged to avoid fiscal crisis; Singh told trade progress needed
BANGALORE, INDIA - He may be the head of a small country, but that didn't prevent Prime Minister Stephen Harper from offering firm words of advice Thursday to the leaders of the world's two largest democracies.
In a phone call to Washington, Harper urged U.S. President Barack Obama to strike a budgetary deal with Congress to avoid an American fiscal crisis that could drag Canada and much of the world into a recession.
And the Canadian prime minister told his Indian counterpart, Manmohan Singh, that Canada is getting impatient with the slow pace of India's efforts to boost trade between the two countries, saying he has made it clear that progress needs "to go farther and faster."
In each case, Harper took pains to point out to the leaders the perils of democratic gridlock to economic stability.
