Harper flops on price of milk

In The Globe and Mail newspaper Saturday, Dec 17, 2005, Harper was unsure of the price of milk. He said three bucks, close but no cigar. Harper could have responded, "What size? One or four litres? At the corner store or the supermarket?" What does the guy do in his spare time? This guy is slow. Would all reporters know the answers to the price of milk?

The story can be found at the URL

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/serv...17/ELXNHARPER19/TPNational/?query=harper+milk

Doesn't the price of milk relate to the TWO trade talks? Protecting inefficient farmers maybe? Getting rid of marketing boards? Mr Policy Wonk Harper has nothing to say here. Is he one of those walking robots trying to take over the world?

As I have mentioned on this forum before, this globalization thingy makes little difference to Canadians. It is only of passing concern. A form of entertainment on the tube.

the efforts put forth to sustain an industry selling puss and a carcinogen to the public is a prime example of who really runs the country.

Basics like bread and milk should be priced low enough that every family in the country could afford them. Bread can usually be found for a dollar per loaf, but the poorest of the working class can hardly afford to keep a family in dairy products. Harper and Martin probably have never done their own grocery shopping..they have assistants to take care of all the mundane details of life for them.

i think it is a crime that propaganda promotes the use of foods that are not all that good for you such as milk for the masses, and the pricing of much junk reflects it. It is rediculous that healthy eating is more expensive, and even sadder is people put their health second to other things (like eating cheap crap so they have more money for "toys"). Your health should come first, and diet and exercise are your control over it.

Take care of yourselves, people!

That's why so many poor are fat and out of shape. All they can afford to eat is full of carbs[pasta, beans, etc.] and there's no way they can have fresh vegs on what Welfare gives them. Food banks usually give out tinned beans, tomato soup,pasta-so there's nothing but subsistance food for them .

I hardley ever buy milk myself, except when I crave cereal. But it is 2.39 for a two litre and 3.59 for a 4 litre. Bread is 99 cents for a 16 oz loaf or 1.29 for a 24oz at Save on Foods/Overwaitea for the store brand, but I have seen it at the market store for 79 cents for 24 oz loaf.

We find eating healthy less expensive than eating poorly. Maybe fresh produce and basic ingredients are a lot less expensive in Calgary than wherever you live.

Well out here potatoes, carrots, celery, cucumbers, radish, onions are pretty cheap, lettuce can get pricey but a lot of produce especially in season is pretty cheap, like corn. I find the farmer market type places have the better prices than the big chains.

I do grow potatoes, onions, cucumbers, redish, carrots but I never plant enough for a full year though. I actually plant them all in the numerous large planters I have, and yes even potatoes. I get free sheep manure from a friend that has a farm. But my new landlord wants to plant a garden next year so, he said if I help him remove grass and set it up , I can have half the space, so I should be able to plant more, and maybe some of my own corn.

What the hell are you talking about? Most poor are fat because they choose to eat crap, not because they can't afford to. Around here, a lot of the farms tried to give away the extra fresh veg they had in the fall, AND NOBODY WANTED THEM.

It's called laziness and stupidity, and oddly enough, that's why most of them are poor.

sorry, but it does more harm than good. it is only out of the history of use that the practice is carried forward.

if you want to play the "i was on the farm" card, i know dairy farmers that are true hypocrites because they produce the stuff but do not drink it or feed it to their children because they know what it really does to the body.

I recommend you do some research. Ever hear of IGF-I for one? Look into it and discover the cancer connection.

Milk/dairy consumption is also positively associated with obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and migranes to name just a few.

Eating good nutritious food is not that expensive, but it does take a little knowledge. Today many people never cook food from scratch, and that is unhealthy.

Marketing boards say they need set prices so farmers can establish a steady "supply". What bilge, there is no shortage of food in Canada. Mktg boards keep prices up because they restrict entry into the business, you have to buy a licence to sell eggs or milk.

The problem is the big agrobusiness that for example, did not lower the price of beef during the mad cow crisis, when prices dropped. Harper is just too much in bed with the corporate crowd to complain about this.
