Why would any Canadian want to purchase a smuggled gun?

Better question: Why would any criminal buy a smuggled gun?

And those are really the people that we're concerned about, right? We're not concerned with law abiding citizens having guns for subsistence or recreation. We're concerned with criminals having guns for unlawful purposes.

The answer to the question, by the way, is twofold:

1) They're cheaper. Especially if they've already been used in a crime prior to sale.

2) It's the only way most criminals can get a gun.

A lot of people are criminals only because of the guns they possess. My guess is only about 70% of the long guns in Canada have been registered, and there are a hell of a lot of unregistered restricted weapons out there too...........I remember when the government banned the "riot gun" model of the Benelli semi-auto shotgun back in the early 90s, and then bragged about how some 40 of these dangerous weaponss had been duly registered with the gov't........funny thing is, I knew a small gunshop owner in rural NB......he told me he ALONE had sold 15 of the weapons..........

Reason 3? An illegal, unregistered, smuggled gun can't be seized.

I know a guy who verbally threatened to shoot someone with a firearm. He was arrested and got a 10 year firearms ban. The funny thing about it though, is that when the police arrested him, they didn't even check to see if he owned a gun. Isn't that bizzare?

Maybe they just checked the gun registry and saw that he wasn't a registered gun owner. The cops probably just put two and two together. You know, if he's not registered, he must not have a gun.

It's only bizarre if we didn't believe that this behavior was indeed plausible and possible. Because there is a market for untraceable firearms, it wouldn't matter if a person owns a registered firearm or not, the salient issue is that someone who "intends" to procure a firearm and kill someone with it is a threat.

My question regarding why anyone would purchase a smuggled gun was merely a seed...

Do the dynamics that lead-up-to the desperation of choosing to use a firearm to kill somone (or many as seen in our "learning institutions) represent the root causes of criminal violence or is it just the "gun"...?

I've said this before and I'll say it again. The government of Canada is playing fast and loose with the whole issue of "gun registries" and "gun-control" not as serious strategies to ensuring that firearms are managed and owned responsbily but as panacea for a much greater and wide-spread malaise throughout "civilized" society. The message is "Look at the gun as the source and effecter in criminality and don't look any further.."

It's a sham to focus on fireams as the causal element when drugs, a corrupt business and legal system, poverty and so many other conditions obtain in a "free and democratic society"...

It's whitewash that has the ability to bamboozle the sheeple and give their thirty second attention spans something to focus on while the greater injustices and social ills wreck havoc throughout our noble enterprise.

It's simply another iteration of the shell game...
