Gun attack on Ireland football manager
Football chiefs are reviewing security after Steve Staunton, the Republic of Ireland's football manager, was threatened at gunpoint outside the team's hotel.
Republic of Ireland's manager Steve Staunton was not harmed by the gunman
The 37-year-old fled inside the Portmanock Hotel near Dublin after he was confronted by the man just before 8pm yesterday.
Staunton, who was not injured, informed staff, who in turn contacted the Gardai.
Local officers arrived on the scene within minutes and arrested the man aged in his early 30s after he fled onto a nearby beach.
No weapon has yet been recovered, but officers are continuing to search the area.
It is understood the arrested man has a history of psychiatric problems.
The Football Association of Ireland will undertake a review of security following the incident ahead of tomorrow's friendly match against Holland.
In a statement, the FAI said: "The matter is now being dealt with by the Gardai.
"The Republic of Ireland manager Steve Staunton is absolutely fine and looking forward to training."
It is the second time an armed incident has occurred at the Portmarnock Hotel while the Irish team were there.
Almost three years ago an armed raider fired a shotgun blast through the ceiling of the hotel as players enjoyed an evening meal.
