I'm not sure what they thought of it.

Did he realy give up on his own culture? Or did he perhaps steps to save the vast cultures of the world by being reborn and taking the challenge of saving the environment and nature.

I think at the time, there was a fasination with Native peoples, so yes, it would have made him a novelty and thus able to reach more people.

I feel the man was honored by the natives in their acceptance of him and he was one of the first real naturalists and conservationists & one of the greatest Canadians.

seems like he had issues with his own people though. i mean, pretending to be something he really wasnt is kinda weird, dont you think?
