I got a tough one for you, Tom...

The story of American agricultural progress from the colonial period to the present time is an interesting and spectacular one. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, industrial activities were limited, cities were relatively small, and a large part of the population of working age was engaged in the production of food.

I don't know those ones Tom or Rev. I have a feeling I should know Tom's, but the Rev's sounds like something out of a text book.
How about...

My own first experience of death came when I was about seven. We were preparing to leave the Eastern Highlands to travel to central Tibet. Samten, one of the personal attendants of my master, was a wonderful monk who was kind to me during my childhood. He had a bright, round, chubby, face, always ready to break into a smile. He was everyone's favourite in the monestary because he was so good natured....

Mine was from "Farm Gas Engines and Tractors" by Professor Fred R. Jones. It's considered a classic in some circles. ;-)

I dropped Maria off in front of the tattoo parlor just before midnight. There was no place to park on the street, so I sent her inside and found a place on the sidewalk, in front of a house with no lights.

Hunter S. Thompson -- Gonzo Papers (2?)

It was the afternoon of my eighty-first birthday, and I was in bed with my catamite when Ali announced that the archbishop had come to see me.

I have no idea, so I cheated and Googled it. I won't say though...let somebody else try it.

The Thompson book's proper title is Generation of Swine, Henry. Gonzo Papers II is the sub-title. You deserve an extra prize for getting that...I had to check the jacket to find it.

In a hole in the ground there lived a *****. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat; it was a ***** hole, and that means comfort.
