But you're talking about putting significant restrictions on a legal product with perfectly legitimate uses. What else do they use to cook the meth? Pots, pans, gas burners - maybe we should start a registry for these things to track them??

How about taking these 'couple' of off the shelf cold medications and put them behind the counter or by prescription

You don't even have to buy these cold medications (usually containing psuedo ephedrine), you can buy bottles of pure ephedrine hydrochloride from most health food stores, which is even better for Mr drug maker.

I think that something major needs to be done for people on this drug. Sending them to jail is a waste of time and money. This should not about punishing somebody for addiction.

Check out the guy in the link above. The most horrifying thing about his behavoir is that it is not abnormal.

The restriction would be on the drug itself, so pots and pans wouldn't be included. And I don't think that would be considered a "significant restsriction" at all, just controlled. Anyone needing to purchase 10+ packages at any one time is obviously buying it for non cold related uses and the authorities should be notified, or ID required for the purchase. If you don't have anything to hide then it shouldn't be a worry to anyone who feels the need to buy cold medications in bulk.

This is little more than window dressing, sentences for hard drugs, are no where near life in prison. Meth is more serious than most, but its hard to control because almost anyone can make it and its cheap
When as a society we declare war on an ideoligy we set ourselves up for failure. We waste tons of money, for little in the way of results, and we encourage even more people to become involved in the trade because we can't control the situation.
What should happen is the present laws should be enforced to the max for hard drug trafficking, that would send a real message.

Higher maximum sentences are useless.

A more severe minimum sentence would prove much more useful.

And moreso than either, a higher probability of both the makers and the users getting caught, would really make a significant impact, regardless of increased or decreased maximum sentences.
