Rampant contamination of natural and agricultural lands by genetically modified organisims , GMOs, is a problem in a lot of ways.

The GMO registry has actual contaminations listed -

They are also finding that GMO crops use MORE pesticides than regular crops. That was supposed to be a benefit of GMO crops, but na na, that would not be profitable would it?

This one is a report you can buy about NAFTA being used to force GMOs on Mexico, and the dangers of GMOs, and the Mexican corn that is being lost due to GMo corn.

What companies like Monsanto have done in rural Mexico is a crime. Corn has been grown for thousands of years in Mexico. It is the staple of all Mexicans. Millions of people eat nothing but the corn they manage to grow when the rains permit. The saving of seed from the harvest is a deeply ingrained custom.

I remember working with farmers down there and sweet talking men in suits went to offer them free seed and free fertilizers and guaranteed they would buy all the product.

At harvest time, the farmers did what they always have done - they selected the very best corn to be stored for next year's seed. When the farmers were paid for their corn, they were informed that the cost of seed and fertilizer for the next growing season would cost them pretty much all that they were making from this year's harvest. They decided to plant thier own seed, which they selected and stored at harvest. Well the plants were scrawny, and they didn't mature. They didn't even produce enough for the farmers family to store corn for their own consumption. I saw this first hand in several "ejidos". I know it happened all over the place and it has in just a few short years destroyed a tradition that lasted for thousands of years. Companies like Monsanto are profitting from the hunger and misery of countless Mexican families.

Ted...welcome. What's happened to real agriculture is obscene. The depth to which agriculture (real agriculture) has been damaged is really weird. There are some who think it is a good thing.

Yeah, don't get me started on this rant!

It is one thing for them to take over the large corporate farms, but to mess with indigenous peoples that were only just subsisting and take away their sustenance in the name of corporate profit is criminal.

I have been trying to avoid all genetically altered foods. It is almost impossible unless you have your own land and a good stock of heritage seed, or if you have the money to buy only organic.

These foods are poison. My kids saw a film at school about the effects of these foods on our bodies. It apparently takes 10 times longer for our bodies to decompose after death than before GM foods. The government is going to require foods to be labeled as genetically modified, but they need to go a few steps further, in my opinion.

I am preparing to contact my MP about the ways that MSG is hidden on product labels. MSG is added because it makes us want to eat more. When I get more information I will post about the effects of MSG and hydrolyzed substances on our health.

Not to take away from the topic of thread or anything, but I think GM meat products is worse. Aquaculture for one has to be one of the most destructive practices in the GM industrie!
