Not in the engine room. I was black gang. Oiler bilge rat mechanic, heart of the vessel, a great quarum of minds battleing the Atlantic and submarines.

I was also a stoker and did not have to spend all of my time above decks but it did happen, from time to time.

Steamers, obviously. Reciprocating steam?
