Is this the most powerful camera in the world? Giant 3.2billion-pixel device will give us the 'deepest view of the night sky ever seen'

  • The camera will take the equivalent of 800,000 images by an eight-mega pixel camera every night - but of a vastly superior quality
  • It will be housed in the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope in Chile

So, I'm guessing that this camera doesn't use the standard memory cards available at London Drugs?

I think they usually send the data back to Earth where it is stored on a multi Terabyte RAID system.

Astronomers always have a difficult time stating what good they do for society (other than knowledge for the sake of knowledge that all science enjoys) but one of the things they mention is that the technology that is used today in cameras was developed mostly for astronomy, and a lot of the drive for higher throughput communications protocols comes from projects like these.

Wow, this has gotten way too advanced for me. I just had flashbacks to the days of my using Kodak Tri-X high speed, high grain film, (400asa) but prefering the low speed low grain lower contrast Pan-F, (32 asa). I developed the film and printed the pictures in my basement. All b&w mind you, but it was an art form. With all this friggin' magic nowadays, who can keep up? I'm sure there are a few old farts out there who know of what I speak.
