A football fan has named his newborn son ‘Bermondsey Millwall Den’ without telling his wife.

Millwall supporter Mike Bloomfield, 58, who grew up in Bermondsey, south-east London, where the League One club play their home games at The Den, made the decision.

His wife Kellie, 38, told how he was ‘frightened’ to come home after visiting the registry office to confirm the name, but added that she is now beginning to like her husband’s idea.

The family actually live in Croydon, south London, and therefore are surrounded by Crystal Palace fans, with their Crystal Palace-supporting friends saying they will call the baby "Dave" instead.

Despite being called Millwall, the football club has not played in the Millwall area of east London since it moved to Bermondsey, four miles away, over 100 years ago.

He told MailOnline today: ‘He was a surprise baby, shall we say, and so it was either going to be that or Houdini - because where’s he come from?! I thought he’s the next generation, why not.

‘The wife wasn't too pleased. She's just started talking to me again. I told her “by the way, it's Bermondsey Millwall Den”. It went quiet for a little while, but she's just getting used to it now.’

Lions season ticket holder Mr Bloomfield added that ‘if David Beckham can name his son Brooklyn, then I can name mine Bermondsey’, and said all his Millwall-supporting friends are ‘loving it’.

The couple believe some nicknames for their three-week-old son could include Bee and Den - with the boy’s third name referring to both the club’s home ground and also to his grandfather Dennis.

And Mrs Bloomfield was surprisingly forgiving, but only a few days later. She told the Southwark News: ‘He did say he might do it but I didn’t expect it. He was a bit frightened to come home.

‘I’m coming around to it though and I quite like it. It’s growing on me. I think he looks a bit like a Bermondsey, and it’s definitely unique. I don’t think anyone else has got a name like that.

‘The funny thing is that we actually live in Croydon and are surrounded by Crystal Palace fans. Our friends who are Palace fans say that they’re just going to call him “Dave” instead.’

Even the family dog’s name is influenced by Millwall, named Kitchener after the Millwall legend Barry Kitchener, who played more than 500 games for the club between 1966 and 1982.

Mr Bloomfield said that his boy - born on October 27 - must grow up to be a Lions fan, adding that he has already been given two tiny replica kits and a club teddy bear.

His father, who now lives in Croydon, added that he was hoping to bring Bermondsey to his first Millwall match this Saturday when they take on Colchester United at The Den.

Mr Bloomfield has two other children with Mrs Bloomfield - a son called Alfie, 14, who is a youth footballer for League Two club Barnet FC, and his 13-year-old daughter Summer.

He also has three children from a previous marriage - Michael, 32, Harriet, 21, and Joshua, 23. The latter was also given the middle name of ‘Millwall’, but he is now a Chelsea supporter.

Statistics released in August revealed four babies were named Messi last year while 11 were given the name Ronaldo, after the La Liga duo who play for Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively.

In 2011 Burnley fans Amanda and Stephen Preston named their son after the club’s first team - calling him Jensen Jay Alexander Bikey Carlisle Duff Elliot Fox Iwelumo Marney Mears Paterson Thompson Wallace Preston.

And in January of this year a Liverpool fan from Norway revealed that he has a daughter called Karolina YNWA, an acronym of the Premier League club’s anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone.
