Finland have won the annual Eurovision Song Contest, in Athens this year, for the first time ever - and they must be the wackiest (and ugliest) winner ever. Finland's entry in this year's contest was a rock band called Lordi - and they looked like a slightly uglier, more terrifying version of Slipknot. They won with 292 points which means that next year's contest will be held in Helsinki. Luckily, most of the singers from the other countries looked normal - even though most of the songs were downright and in some cases just absolutely awful.

And the usual case of neighbourly voting occured - such as the Scandinavian countries voting for each other, the Balkan countries voting for each other, and Britain and Republic of Ireland giving each other 8 points out of a maximum of 12.

Good Lordi! - the monsters of the heavy metal band Lordi won the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest for Finland.

Britain's more normal, more civilised, and more clean-cut entry, Daz Sampson. He sang a rap song called Teenage Life - and finished 19th out of 24. We had a consolation in the fact that France finished 22nd.

RE: Finland win the Eurov

yeah but that Daz was awful Blackleaf, quite possibly the worst UK entrance I've ever heard....it's sad to think the last time we won, we won with Katrina and the waves....and you know where she's from eh?.

But Daz was rubbish, at least the finnish entrants had the balls to turn up in those outfits and sing heavy metal stuff at a pop concert

Finland was crap. But not nearly as CRAP as Lithuania who got tons of points!!!

I thought the best were Ireland, Norway and Israel and they hardly got any points! Its such a stupid voting method, get over all the political shit and just vote for the best songs already!

Brian Kennedy makes me swoon... I've been in love with him and his voice as long as I can remember...

I remember when Brian sang "you raise me up" at George Best's funeral, he was brilliant

I love listening to my Van Morrison CDs with him singing.. his voice is so pure and wonderful. I've been in love with him since I was seven years old..

The whole eurovision contest seems to be getting worse and worse. Though some of it is charming, I just can't watch it..

No offense Andem, but Germany was pretty dodgy!!! Though maybe Australia is to blame for that, the chick in the pink fluffy dress studied at the Sydney Convervatorium of Music!!!

I'd never heard of Brian Kennedy before but Ireland always has a good song! I remember a few years ago, Mickey Harte sang "we've got the world tonight' and I LOVED it!

I think some countries just dont try anymore, it would appear they just put forward a song as a joke. Like what on earth was Lithuania and UK all about?!?! They cant really think that's talent, can they?!

of course not, I was ashamed of Daz....I dont know he could realistically even hope to get anything more than nil points..I think the reason for it was that we were pretty much sick of everyone else not taking it seriously, so we thought we'd join in...Ireland voted for us for a change though!!!

I thought that American, Katrina and her waves were actually very, very good, and fully deserved to win it for us in 97...I dont know how she managed to qualify for us though, her being an american.....not quite as bad as Celine Dion for Austria though

I really can't stand the singer who represented Russia this year. He is so sickeningly sweet, and the lyrics of his songs usually make very little sense, if at all. I was really surprised that he took the second place.
