A 16-year-old schoolboy was yesterday sentenced to a minimum of 20 years for stabbing his schoolteacher to death. He would have got a lot longer had he been over the age of 21.
Will Cornick stabbed Mrs Maguire, 61, seven times in the back and neck at Corpus Christi Catholic College in Leeds, then sat down and said "good times".
This crime was particularly shocking because British schools, unlike their American counterparts, are usually not violent, dangerous places where every pupil puts their life into their own hands just by attending. They are usually safe, secure places. It was the first killing in a British school for quite a few years, probably since the 1996 Dunblane massacre.
