What's the name of the Spielberg film from way before Star Wars. There's an alien that looks like a huge beach ball and a smart bomb that they try to philosophise into not exploding. It's quite bizarre.

I believe the reason you are having trouble recalling the title, is because you are thinking of John Carpenter's feature debut 'Dark Star from 1974.
