Ethiopian parishioners were left horrified when the holiest of moments turned hellish.
Lake Abaya turned red when a man-eating crocodile reportedly leapt from the murky waters and attacked Pastor Docho Eshete as he prepared to baptize 80 worshippers in Arba.
The beast reportedly clamped down on the 45-year-old’s legs, back and hands, killing him as followers worked to prevent the crocodile from dragging Eshete further into the depths.

“He baptized the first person and he passed on to another one. All of a sudden, a crocodile jumped out of the lake and grabbed the pastor,” a local resident told the BBC.
The crocodile reportedly escaped as fishermen used nets to retrieve Eshete’s body.
Lake Abaya is known to have a large population of crocodiles.

Lonely Planet reports the animals are aggressive towards humans due to a lack of additional food sources.
