I realize that the nest of a swallow family is a far cry from eagles' nests.

However, there is an old saying (at least in my old country) that if swallows built a nest on your house, it will bring good luck.

We moved here in July 2007. Next spring we had swallows built their nest and by September the new baby swallows were ready to fly.

Good luck? No, I did not win the lottery, but after we moved here, we have been blessed with two movie star beautiful grandchildren.

We moved to Nanaimo about 6 years ago from Gabriola Island. On Gabriola we had Chickadees go from eggs to flying birds in little more than a month. We built birdhouses from every scrap of wood we could find. I'm guessing the warmer weather and the bird houses
speeded things up a bit.

My wife always had bird feeders. It was most amusing to see squirrels fight with blue jays.

Our house here in Winnipeg is located next to a "retention pond". In the fall, I swear, there are at least three million geese yakking all night, enjoying the water and getting ready for migration. Also, we have road signs for drivers to give the right of way to geese, predictably, marching across Bishop Grandin Blvd. in single file.

I love birds. I wish I could fly. Preferably without some swarthy characters searching and touching me at airports.
