I guess it's in line with Abortion, Forced Sterilization, Population Control known as Eugenics.

A Dutch researcher has created a virus with the potential to kill half of the planet’s population. Now, researchers and experts in bioterrorism debate whether it is a good idea to publish the virus creation ”recipe”. However, several voices argue that such research should have not happened in the first place.

The virus is a strain of avian influenza H5N1 genetically modified to be extremely contagious. It was created by researcher Ron Fouchier of the Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam, Netherlands. The work was first presented at a conference dedicated to influenza, that took place in September in Malta.

Avian influenza emerged in Asia about 10 years ago. Since then there were fewer than 600 infection cases reported in humans. On the other hand, Fouchier’s genetically modified strain is extremely contagious and dangerous, killing about 50% of infected patients. The former strain did not represent a global threat, as transmission from human to human is rare. Or, at least, it was before Fouchier genetically modified it.

cough, sorry. I kind of disagree.

I think the world is way to over populated, and we are using up resources at a staggering rate, which will leave nothing for future generations.

I kind of feel it will be inevitable in the future to do something as drastic as release a deadly virus into the general population to control the worlds population and seriously reduce it.

In the past with had out breaks or epidemics, world wars to keep the population in control. Now we are 7 billion, and by 2050 9 billion or more..

You missed the point. Who gets to decide who lets it loose? You? Me? The Dutch? The USA? The UK?
Actually we here would be more likely to survive than city dwellers. Low contact with large populations and all that.

We have had world wars, plagues, and natural disasters that have culled our population in the past. What was the result? We bred. And we bred like freaking rabbits because we were scared, and sad, and we are driven to save our race. A pandemic would not help the world population in the long run, and might serve simply to kill off the level of tech and industry we have achieved and return us to when the environment was not a consideration, survival was. That doesn't benefit the planet.

What DOES benefit the planet, what DOES cut down on population growth, is affluence and education. Narrow the economic gaps, educated the people, and birth rates drop, much like Canada's. We are shrinking as a matter of fact. That is the key, not killing off people like they were an over population of mice.

Look Karrie is right too.. but the earth goes through checks and balances.. we are using up way to many resources. A population check will slow this down.. will it kill off all the smart people.. probably not.

It will hit 3rd world countries harder than countries with strong economies and good infrastructure.

Wrong. In general, the healthier people are the more likely they are to survive. The less contact with other people, the more likely they will be to survive. etc. etc. Pandemics are highly choosy.

Some believe we will do anything to reduce the population instead of doing
what really needs to be done. The reason, it will cost more money to engage
in a long term valuable solution. Karrie put it best as to what has to be done.
We have had despots who commit mass murder, we have had ideologues who
want to kill a selected group and revolution and natural disease have all
killed millions throughout history and there is a common denominator. Ignorance.
We stood back and allowed dictators to murder at will, we allowed religious
societies to kill for sacrifices to gods, and in some cases those we did not
understand were witches and we would save their souls.
In some nations even today we see tribal groups come together and kill their
neighbours in places like Africa and and else where.
Now we call potential mass murderers, researches how interesting.
Through the pages of history we have done all we can to structure the perfect
world in dictators images but we never have addressed the issue of ignorance.
Of course not, because then we would have to talk about serious constructive
solutions and that would cost time and money with no instant solutions.

Yeah. Probably research. More specifically how viruses work and how to combat them. It's why most medical research takes place.
