The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh have visited the tiny Mediterranean nation of Malta to mark 60 years of independence.

Malta gained its independence from Britain in 1964 and the King's brother and sister-in-law met Maltese President Myriam Debono and her husband in the capital Valletta.

Malta is the only country to be awarded the George Cross, which was awarded to it by King George VI - the Duke of Edinburgh's grandfather - in 1942 after the tiny country was victorious after the Germans and Italians laid siege to it.

Today, after independence from the British Empire, Malta is the EU's smallest member state and the world's tenth-smallest country.
