Donkey or an elephant

I'm curious about the logos of the GOP and Democrat party. Does anyone know why they have an elephant and a donkey?

Both have to do with political cartoons published in the mid 19th century.

Thomas Nast, a political cartoonist, used the elephant in 1794, shown demolishing the Democratic Party's planks, and another cartoon showed the Democrats as a donkey. Officially I don't think the Democrats ever adopted the donkey as their symbol but they use it anyway, I'm not sure why either of them stuck.
