More than 1,500 people heard harrowing stories of domestic beatings of women in the Indo-Canadian community at a forum in Surrey, B.C., on Thursday night.

So the question remains: is this immigrant group going to change its habits to satisfy Canadian mores or are we, in the name of multiculturalism, simply going to hope it does but do substantively nothing? Some arrivals are compatible with western expectations and some aren't. We should start to understand that. And do something about it.

My question is this: These women are victims why aren't the abusers being held accountable? Domestic Abuse is suppose to be a crime, if those whom immigrate to Canada choose to follow their backward ethos of beating their wives then they should be imprisoned not protected by the community. The females have taken the first step, now it's up to the Police and Community Leaders to get this message out: We will not tolerate Domestic Abuse regardless of what your Religion or Tribal customs are.

"We will not tolerate Domestic Abuse regardless of what your Religion or Tribal customs are."...unless you are a visible minority , then we not sure how the law works!!

Whats wrong with the "when in Rome" outlook... This is a country of laws and cultural ways...If you don't like them don't be here, If you come for a better life, remember the laws are there to create a better life... It's an all or nothing deal, you can't come here for a good house and good job, but beat your wife like you did in the paper shack by the muddy river...

These women are among the most abused women in the country. Part of the problem is that women who report the abusers are then treated as pariahs. Let one of these women deliver two consecutive female babies and she might be abused by her inlaws as well....she might even be killed.

I can't believe anyone is suggesting Canada would tolerate this in the name of multiculturalism. It's illegal. End of story as far as the government is concerned. When I volunteered at immigrant services, they made sure women were educated about that fact (they had pamphlets explaining domestic violence laws in several different languages). The problem is the same as all domestic violence cases: getting a guilty verdict if the victim won't participate. Women immigrants are often even more dependent on their spouses than native born Canadians.

Tracy, Canada is not a finishing school for recalcitrant cultures. I expect the immigration department to be aware of ongoing difficulties in newly established immigrant communities. And respond to them. If our community and social services here aren't making a dent I expect some ministry changes. If that's not part of the job description it should be.

I never said Canada was a finishing school. Domestic violence is illegal. No government body encourages it or allows it. Unfortunately in the end it's up to women themselves to stop it. The government can only give them tools to do it.
