Does Canada need a US-style Bill of Rights?

Even assuming Catholics' taxes cover it, the principle is that other religious communities don't have the same right even though they still pay into taxes, but they are forced into secular schools. Certainly anyone who believes in equal rights for all would argue either that each religion ought to be entitled to its own separate school system or none of them, or some other alternative that puts them all on some equal footing.

You don't seem to believe in that principle though. I can think of a few groups among the ruling elite in Iran who like the way you think.

Canada needs a proper bill of rights, scrap the official languages crap, affirmative action, religious schools, the notwithstanding clause. The US bill of rights is an excellent model. Weed out some of the ambiguity and it's near perfect. But I think it's more likely that Canada joins the United States than the provinces ever agree to a selfless constitution compromise.

Or if the anti-Americans fuss about it, then let's base it on the French Declaration des droits de l'homme et du citoyen, and just don't mention that the US one is based on the French one and so they're essentially pretty darn similar.

France and the US both have bills of rights they can truly be proud of without a doubt.

And quite frankly, having a bill of rights all Canadians could be proud of rather than some Canadian Bill of Compromises would likely boost patriotism significantly too. After all, it's hard to brag about a bill of rights that discriminates on the basis of language and that has to submit to a constitution that discriminates based on religious affiliation, to mention just a few points. After all, why do we think schools only brush through our constitution so quickly? It's probably because the teachers themselves are ashamed of it too.

Do you live in Ontario, CDN Bear? Anyway, I do, and no I don't take kindly to having to fund a school of a religion I don't believe in.

Yeah, that's obvious, in just about every thread you post in. Pretty much your obsession, quite honestly. One can only assume that you were molested by a priest, you have such a single-minded focus on this issue.

My sympathies to you, it's hard being a victim.

Not every thread, but where it applies. But if you want to defend privilege, by all means. Iran has a similar system albeit even more extreme.

"gerryh.....Ya, strange eh, Catholics having to prove they are Catholic to attend a Catholic school, whereas non Catholics don't need to prove bupkiss to attend."
I checked out a job with the Catholic School system in Edmonton a while back and was told I had to be Catholic to even get an application to fill out, never mind being considered for the job.

"gerryh.....here, and in most jurisdictions in Ontario, you have a choice on your tax forms as to where you want your taxes routed to, separate or public. You don't have that choice in your town/municipality/city/whateverthe****youcallit."
We have in Edmonton also. (maybe all of Alberta) Add another choice of 'other' maybe??

But where did the funding come from? If it's private, fair enough. But here in Ontario (and maybe you can confirm if it's the case in Alberta), it comes directly from the government and applies exclusively to Catholic schools.

no shyte exlax. Of course you have to be Catholic to work in a Catholic School district. You'd have to be a complete moron to think otherwise.

If you think every single Catholic in Toronto, of the estimated 3,911,760 Catholics in the Province of Ontario, is of age, has children in the system, or is otherwise checking that box, guaranteeing that the $970,000,000 budget of the Toronto district Roman Catholic school Board, alone, is being funded by Catholics alone!

You need to give your head a shake Gh.
