What I am talking about is the slippery slope that I mentioned.

The suzuki Foundation tried to straddle the fence on it and got caught... The underlying message here is that the CRA has specific rules for charities (like them or not) to prevent any grey areas from being exploited.

I never said I disagree with the protocol.

Just that maybe it should be changed to reflect the needs of the citizens involved. Either we make a strict policy where no political activity is allowed on the part of charities, or we allow political activity, but require charities to be democratically elected.

Fair enough, but how do we then effectively measure 'what the citizens want'?.. unless there is 100% buy-in, someone is bound to holler and scream about being marginalized.

In the end, I think that the best option is to eliminate that part of the equation all together. If an org is really interested in political commentary, profit, etc, let them start a new org to accommodate that ends... No overlap, no confusion.

Anyone making a stink about these guys.....eh wot?

This was more to my point that the charity status only matters to the government if they disagree with the theme of that charity. If the charity is partisan in their favour, they don't give a crap.

Funny I haven't heard of anyone writing letters of complaint like this about churches. They get their noses into politics all the time. But, I can't help but wonder if it's something in the difference between a charity and a non-profit?

personally I appreciate that there's a cap to what an npo or a charity can spend on political maneuvering. And the percentage seems reasonable.
