Roughly 1 in 100 Americans die every year. West Virginia has the highest death rate by state: 1,462.7 per 100,000 residents. Alabama has the highest death rate by a single cause: nearly 300 residents per 100,000 die of heart disease every year — but that number is affected by the relatively advanced average age of the state’s population. Once you adjust for that, the heart-unhealthiest state is Mississippi at 245.6 deaths per 100,000, and the heart-healthiest is Minnesota at 118.

In 2022, there were 24,849 homicides in the United States. There were 49,476 deaths by suicide. D.C. had a higher rate of homicides and a lower rate of suicide deaths than any state. Among the states, New Hampshire had the lowest homicide rate. New Jersey had the lowest suicide rate and — maybe not a coincidence — the densest population. Across the United States, the ratio of suicides to homicides, per 100,000 people, was 14.3 to 7.5. The states with the highest ratio of suicides to homicides are Montana and Utah. Overdosing and poisoning are common ways to die (97,034 deaths) but very uncommon ways to murder (179 homicides).

In 2020, almost as many Americans died in falls as from firearms: 43,292 vs. 45,222.

About 1 in 25 American boys ages 5 to 17 have a diagnosis of autism. Boys are four times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with the condition. Diagnoses of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: 14.5 percent of American boys, 8 percent of girls. The likelihood of an ADHD diagnosis decreases as family incomeincreases.

The average annual income for a nuclear medicine technologist in Albany, N.Y., in May 2023 was $93,460. The average annual wage nationwide that month was $65,470, which translates to an average hourly wage of $31.48.
