The quick actions of an OPP officer stopped a man with a knife who showed up at the home of Premier Doug Ford.
The incident occurred early Monday evening and despite the possibility for violence, no one was injured.
“Last night, a man with a large butcher’s knife showed up at the premier’s home while yelling threats,” Ford’s press secretary Alexandra Adamo said in a statement.
“An OPP officer was on-site and arrested the man immediately.”
“The premier thanks the officer for his quick action and bravery, which resulted in no harm to anyone involved in the incident,” Adamo said.
George Niras, 44, of Toronto, faces a single charge of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and 11 counts of mischief to property under $5,000.
In a news release, Toronto Police alleged Niras slashed the tires of several vehicles prior to approaching the premier’s house.
NDP Leader Andrea Horwath also applauded the work of the OPP officer on the scene.

“This is such horrifying news. My thoughts are with Doug and his family. My thanks to the OPP officer for the quick response. Everyone deserves to feel and to be safe,” Horwath said.
Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca also sent well wishes to Ford.
“Threatening the premier is abhorrent and jeopardizes the lives of everyone holding public office. We may have disagreements, but it can never come to this. My thoughts and well wishes are with the premier after this frightening incident,” Del Duca said.
Ford has been subject to numerous threats and protests outside of his home.
On May 20, Chris Saccoccia was arrested and charged with death threats against Ford.
Saccoccia, who calls himself Chis Sky and has led protests against Ontario’s COVID-19 lockdown measures, is accused by police of threatening to kill Ford and making threats against other premiers.
That case has yet to be tried in court and Sky is free on bail.
Last fall, Ford said the loud protests taking place outside his home were more of an irritation to his neighbours than to him.
“Every single day,” he said, “there are protesters outside my house. It doesn’t, it doesn’t affect me. I’m not there.
“I have the best neighbours anyone could ever ask for. They didn’t sign up for this. They aren’t making decisions for the government,” Ford said.
“It is totally unfair. It’s unacceptable that they have to put up with this because they’re living beside the premier.”
