What are considered to be the best internet site(s)

to get help for an ‘at home computer user’?

Thank you

What kind of help are you looking for ?

Xp restore feature fixes most problems.

If you want to move up to the more experienced levels, such as online gaming performance techniques than get out your pen lol.

I go wayyyy!!!!!! back when we used dip switches to overclock our systems.

I can help you with just about any issue or problem you have ,just ask and I will give you a link or tell you how to do it.

Are you looking to increase performance for gaming or just have the fastest most responsive system around?
or
Are you just and average user who wants to know how to fix general Computer problems ?
or
Are you wanting to learn how to wreak havoc on the entire banking system for you own greed and satisfaction lol ?
:D

Again, thanks for the feedback.

The GENERIC packed it in again in less than twenty-four hours.

I’ll ‘think’ on the comments you have made.

I feel if I were able to fix these machines it would give me a better idea on how to use them.

Off on another tack, if I may.

On purchasing or building another computer.

A number of years ago, shortly after OS XP came out,

I was speaking with a salesman at Office Depot about a Hewlett Packard?, and eMachines.

As I recall, I was told that you don’t ‘own’ the OS.

It goes with the computer it’s installed on and cannot be installed on any other computer.

As I recall, you don’t get an OS disk. Just a System Restore disk.

Maybe this was just for the HP’s. It’s been some time now.

Finally. I have been considering Linux,

but I ‘don’t want to build a boat, I just want to go sailing’. :)

If I defined just what I want to do with my computer,

do you think that might a good subject for another thread?

I live in east central Florida and I can’t find a computer club in the county.

I’ll be off shopping for a computer this coming week, I suspect.

I’m a Canadian Herring Choker, by the way.

Thanks again for your posts and all the best.

“Are you wanting to learn how to wreak havoc on the entire banking system for you own greed and satisfaction lol ?
Very Happy”

Not really, Swifty.

Just trying to get some sound out of a six or eight-year-old, 300 MH machine.

As I mentioned in my last post,

“I feel if I were able to fix these machines it would give me a better idea on how to use them.”

I think the Gateway is not worth messing with, but I feel the ‘GENERIC’ is.

Having said that, I’m not sure it can be ‘fixed’ through e-mail.

Do you think you could solve the problems by accessing my computer remotely?

Would you want to?

Thanks for your post.

RE: WARWIND

WARWIND

When I initiated this thread, the site you directed me to, was just what I had in mind.

Been doing a lot of reading there, but one thread at a time is all I’m able to handle.

I’m confused enough as it is.

Thanks for the ‘link’.

Much appreciated.

“Apple makes the best . . . . . . . . operating system.”

Conceded.

Maybe Macs suffer from the same attitudes that Linux is experiencing.

Two words....

Mandriva Linux!

This is an operating system that is very friendly to the novice computer user and will run very easily on a Pentium II with 128MBs of RAM. So, anything more powerful is that much better.

Mandriva has wonderful support of computer components and peripherals (printers, scanners, bluetooth devices, etc.) of all kinds.

Mandriva has a very helpful user community as well as official technical support if you decided you wanted that level of support. I'm a member of the Mandrake Club and when ever I had a technical question, the Mandriva technical team are always quick to respond (12 - 24 hours) with helpful advice.

For the paying Mandriva club customers, there are some very helpful tools and services available that make the entire computing experience even better.

I seriously recommend checking out Mandriva for yourself.

I've been blogging about it, so feel free to visit my blog as well.

“What does GENERIC mean”

One of the features most valued by me of the internet.

It alleviates my, sometimes, astounding lack of knowledge in so many areas.

And again, sometimes, with so little effort.

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/generic

Etymology

Latin genus, generis, race, kind: compare French générique.
[edit]

Adjective

generic

1. Very comprehensive; pertaining or appropriate to large classes or groups as opposed to specific

Quotations:
* "...the essence is that such self-describing poets describe what is in them, but not peculiar to them,---what is generic, not what is special and individual." — Walter Bagehot (1826-1877)

2. (biology) Of, or relating to a genus
3. Not having a brand name
4. Of a drug identified by its chemical name
5. (grammar) Specifying neither masculine nor feminine e.g. salesperson

The way I’m using the term, Swifty, is # 3, not having a brand name.

“I can help you with just about any issue or problem you have , just ask and I will give you a link or tell you how to do it.”

That would really mean a lot to me.

Although I have pretty well decided to purchase a new computer, the Gateway would be more than adequate as a radio tuner and an e-mail machine for a semi-confined acquittance of mine.

POST 14 - of this thread pretty well lays out my situation.

After you’ve read that, I have a specific question about swapping sound cards.

Great to have someone of your expertise aboard.

Regards

Apple makes the best computers and the best operating system. The chance of you getting a virus in your Mac is slim to none. The chance of you getting a virus on a PC is pretty high.

Chuck all your PC's in the garbage and buy a Mac. Its the best investment you will ever make.

Macs are for babies.

Can't remember a hard core gamer ever winning off an over clocked Mac lol.

If you like to write poetry, sip a good cup of tea, and enjoy putting your feet into a warm bath of salt water than a Mac is for you :)

I hear (Steven Paul Jobs)will even come and "Burp" you if it's needed.
Let's face reality, the graphics industry is what's moving the computers forward. And Apple has always lagged behind Imho.

PCs suck. Macs rock. They are much easier to use. They have stable hardware and drivers. They run the best operating system in the world. And you don't have to update your software every 5 seconds,

I update my Video card drivers whenever new beta drivers are out or when "end users" have hacked them to make them better than the originals from Nvidia.

I run xp lite which is extremely fast.Never had a problem.

Any software that's any good should need updating if the company is improving it or supporting it.I rarely update any software other than for games which require it.Most games need updating because of the newer drivers and video hardware that's coming out.

You could be correct on one point,Mac's are easier to use. :p
